My Netflix Recommendations

I couldn’t really think of what to write this week. I feel like Netflix is something everyone binges on whether or not we are in lockdown, and has kept me occupied the last couple of weeks for more reasons than one. Here is my public service announcement, and list of shows that I recommend if you’re looking for something new to watch. This is not in any particular order, but rather the top shows that I could think of. Without further ado, here we go.

  • Outer Banks: One of the newest Netflix releases, this is a thriller like no other. It isn’t your usual, a murder has been committed type stuff but something quite different. Also quite a modern take to Romeo and Juliet (or in this case Kooks and Pogues), though no one dies, or do they?

  • The Stranger: This is a very gripping thriller that is a relatively new add to Netflix’s library. As Netflix usually does, it’s currently only one season with about 10 episodes. I don’t want to go too deep into its synopsis but what I will say is that, this is a show that gets right into it within the first 5-minutes of the first episode. There is no dilly dallying in creating a happy family that drags on and then suddenly in episode 3, there’s a twist. Nope, none of that.

  • The Keepers: this was probably the first Netflix documentary I watched back in 2018 or early 2019. It’s about uncovering the truth behind an all-girls catholic school in Boston (I want to say, don’t quote me on the city), cryptic I know. It is a beautifully documented narrative that Netflix has put together, which made me fall in love Netflix’s style of making documentaries.

  • Conversations with a killer: Ted Bundy Tapes – I don’t think this needs any synopsis of my own. But what I will say is that the documentary is much better than the movie that Netflix produced and created. It’s quite chilling to hear Ted’s voice on the tapes.

  • I am a Killer: This is a show that left me emotionally drained. On this show, Netflix interviews prisoners on death row, and gets them to give an account of their crime.

  • Bypass Road: so this is a Bollywood movie. However, given how many international movies and shows that Netflix does, I’m pretty sure y’all have watched some Bollywood movies. This is a slower thriller, but still quite good. Don’t worry I watched it with subtitles, not because I can’t understand, but to see how horribly wrong they were. I can confirm, they weren’t bad at all.

  • Guilty: This is also another Indian movie produced and created by Netflix. Most of the dialogues are in English. This discusses sexual assault.

  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Okay to be fair, this existed for a VERY long time but yay to Netflix for reviving it.

  • The Circle: If you’re wanting some cringe, this is the reality show for you. I haven’t watched Love is Blind yet, don’t plan to either so cannot comment on that. Honorary mention Too Hot To Handle is cringier.

  • Tiger King: this is another cringe and bizarre documentary. It does touch upon a very important issue of tiger captivity and breeding in the States.

  • Designated Survivor: this was originally not a Netflix show. It is quite captivating and Kiefer Sutherland is amazing. Netflix bought the rights to the show, and created and produced the third season, and have now terminated the show. Regardless, I would still recommend it.

  • The Indian Detective: Russell Peters, need I say more? A comic four episode short series, that will keep you occupied for one evening. It is unclear whether there will a second season or not.

  • Carmen Sandiego: This is a fantastic cartoon that both kids and adults can enjoy. There are two seasons, and I hope and pray they create a third season. Netflix, if you’re reading this, this is my request to you.

  • On My Block: whilst this is a teen show, it is quite intense in what it shows. There is a touch on the gang culture in the States and the reality of living and growing up in one.

  • Wormwood: I’m not sure if this documentary exists on Netflix New Zealand anymore, but this was a fantastic documentary on CIA’s top secrets. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this.

  • What/If: this is another newish thrilling show that I enjoyed. If I remember correctly, there are some graphic scenes in this.

I have tried to keep my synopsis of the shows to a minimum so as to not give too much away. If you live with kids, or have young children around, I would recommend digging further into these shows to avoid them walking into and/or watching the shows.

If you’ve got any recommendations, please send them my way. I could always do with more shows.

Until next time,

MiliG
