Gastronomy blog | New Zealand Edition | Where to grab a bite in Nelson
/I like writing these blogs suggesting places to grab a bite in different cities. This is my version for Nelson. I try and follow some rules when I’m on domestic travel. New Zealand cities for the most part are very similar to each other, and to try and have a unique experience, you have to think outside the box, or in my case, eat outside the franchises where possible. Though sometimes, it’s just hard to do that.
As this was my first trip to Nelson, I can really only recommend the places I liked eating at whilst I was there. But nonetheless, here it goes:
Paasha: This is a small family-owned restaurant in Nelson. Yes, I know there are Paasha restaurants here in Auckland too, and I’m assuming these are all franchises (though I may be wrong). I had the chicken shish kebab here, and my oh my, let me tell you how divine it was. The owner looked after us, and gave us a feast! It was the perfect food especially when we were having a late lunch which meant, a big proportion of the day was spent on an empty stomach.
Tongtara: This is a Thai (or rather an Asian fusion) restaurant offering Thai and Malaysian food. Whilst, like most Asian fusion restaurants the menu was quite similar, they had a fantastic list of cocktails. Maybe I’m biased, but I did think their food tasted just slightly better than the other Asian food I’ve had around. Loves a good Chicken noodle stir fry.
Babagatto: A friend recommended that I make my way here, and I’m so glad he did! This is an Italian restaurant and provides a very Italian dining experience. If you’re in the mood for some pasta or a charcuterie board look no further. The staff will look after you, and recommend dishes and wines to your taste. I had the spaghetti carbonara in case you are wondering.
Burger Culture: Burger Culture is probably the Ferg Burger of Nelson. They are massive burgers, cooked to perfection. I can guarantee you, that if you had this for lunch (or rather late lunch), you’re not going to need dinner. If you’re looking for some inspiration look at Notorious, 1000/10 would recommend.
Stefano’s pizzeria: You can never go wrong with pizza. They serve their pizzas in 3 sizes-small, medium, and/or large. I went with a small, ravaged through all the slices of the Putanesca pizza that I ordered. You’re welcome.
These are a selection of the places I dined at, and would definitely look at going back to some of these if/when I make my way back to Nelson. Leave some of your recommendations in the comments below.
Until next time,
